About this deal

Curiously, although Tennyson was the first to use the exact wording of the sentiment as it is now known (‘’Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all’), the idea behind the quotation, as is so often the case with a good proverb, is older. In his 1700 play The Way of the World, William Congreve has a character assert, ‘Say what you will, ’tis better to be left than never to have loved.’

Inspired by David Copperfield, Kingsolver crafts a 21st-century coming-of-age story set in America’s hard-pressed rural South. Eleanor’s death—imagined, anticipated, feared—disquiets Loved and Missed from start to finish, particularly in Ruth’s memory of the night she discovers Eleanor in her bed, naked and barely breathing. After attempting to revive Eleanor herself, Ruth summons an ambulance, then watches paramedics resuscitate her daughter en route to the hospital: One last way you might want to say, “You’ll always be remembered,” is by engraving a message on your loved one’s headstone. This is also known as an epitaph . Always surprising - unexpected, particular, the thing you didn't know you wanted, but needed more than anything. A tender study of unrequited maternal love redeemed ultimately by the quiet glory of not giving up When a person passes away, they live on as a treasured memory for the people they touched in life. Many songs about memories touch on this theme. 4. “A life that touches others goes on forever.” it doesn't happen often, but sometimes i come across books that are so well written, so unique, so groundbreaking to me that i'm angry i never thought to do any of what it did in my own writing. this book expanded my ideas of what novels about grief can even do, and rearranged in my head who is allowed to own that grief: the mother, the daughter, the grandmother. it all cycles in and out until you find yourself unsure of who you relate to or feel worse for. i'm including a small excerpt because i would be remiss if i didn't. in this moment in the book, ruth is attending the funeral for a little girl she once taught in school.
