About this deal

An intellectual giant who spoke in a distinct upper class voice, C A R Crosland should have been Dewar’s dream minister. But they did not get on. The Scottish MP found that Crosland “spoke in a sort of intellectual short hand and if you couldn’t keep up then too bad”. Dewar also found Crosland’s lionising working-class MPs who were useless to be annoying. Canavan blamed the "vindictive attitude" of Albert Wheeler, who was in charge of the Scottish region of the National Coal Board during the strike.

In 2018, the then Cabinet Secretary for Justice Michael Matheson MSP commissioned an independent review group to investigate and report on the impact of the policing of the strike on mining communities. Indeed, I will leave you with a couple of quotes from those involved in different aspects of the strike, firstly this quote from a police officer from a mining community himself: On October 9, he opened the Glasgow headquarters of SMG, the then-media group that included STV and The Herald newspaper. The following day at Bute House he became unwell. The party’s general secretary in Scotland Lesley Quinn was with him and recalled that the First Minister wore a resigned look similar to that of her mother shortly before she died. I have probably had more than my fair share of deaths in my family, having suffered the loss of three of my dear sons and my only beloved daughter. Canavan said of one of his sons: “He spent his last few days on a life support machine but, when it became evident that he was not going to recover, the medical professionals consulted family members and we came to the unanimous decision to switch off the machine. The move was the right one. No-one was better suited to deliver Home Rule and he was temperamentally the right choice in bringing strands of opinion together. George Robertson was always more tribal, particularly when it came to dealing with the SNP. Scottish miners made up about seven per cent of the total UK coalmining workforce - but Scottish miners accounted for about 14 per cent of arrests and over 20 per cent of dismissals." However, I found the standard of NHS care to be excellent and the standard of palliative care in our local Strathcarron Hospice was first class. Mr Canavan's eldest son Mark died in Australia in March 2007 aged 41 following a three-year battle with motor neurone disease. In 1989, the father-of-five lost his first son, Paul, to skin cancer and in 2006, his 35-year-old son Dennis died of a brain tumour.

Supporters of assisted suicide argue it can give those suffering from terminal conditions a more dignified death. In his response to the coronavirus, Boris Johnson is showing utter confusion rather than strong leadership.

Wendy Alexander has said that he did not have an overarching narrative for a new Scotland, but he knew why he was in politics and whose interests he wished to advance.

Mr Canavan said that, after being taught a valuable lesson in life's "real priorities" he decided not to seek re-election.He told the Record: "Speaking in a personal capacity, I think there are very strong arguments for compensation, especially in cases of unfair dismissal.
