About this deal

It can control multiple cameras at once. Up to 5 cameras. That’s fewer than the Smart Remote and WiFi Remote, both of which can control up to 50 cameras at once. In many ways, The Remote is an upgrade over the Smart Remote. But there’s one important area where it isn’t. That’s for controlling multiple cameras at once. With the Smart Remote–and the Wifi Remote, for that matter–you can control up to 50 cameras at once. With The Remote, there’s a maximum of 5 cameras at once.

TELESIN came close to making a worthy alternative to the official smart remote. At first glance, it looks just as good while costing less. Perhaps the best upgrade over the original smart remote comes in the form of increased battery life, thanks to the newly implemented Bluetooth® Low Energy. The whole pairing process is also faster than before. The GoPro Smart Remote is GoPro’s official remote accessory for GoPros that preceded the GoPro Hero 8. It’s not the oldest official remote, however, as it succeeds an even older remote called the “GoPro Wi-Fi remote”. Once again, being an official GoPro accessory, it costs slightly more than unofficial options. It has a built-in, non-replaceable rechargeable battery and charges via USB-C (it comes with a cable but not a charger). This is much more convenient than the unique dedicated charging attachment that some older GoPro remotes have used. Now we have to get the remote into pairing mode while the camera is still in pairing mode so they can find each other. Note – the camera is in pairing mode only when its screen shows the two arrows moving towards each other. Another thing I’ve run into is that sometimes some cameras will start while others don’t. It’s frustrating to find later that one or more cameras simply didn’t start recording. So it basically means that you’ve got to visually confirm that they’ve all started recording. But the ability to control multiple cameras at once is still something I find very useful. If you want to use voice commands

Since I originally posted this, GoPro has discontinued the Remo. I’m not particularly surprised, honestly. Several times I ran into reliability issues when using it even just as a button remote with the voice aspect. And based on reports from other users that accumulated online, I’m not the only one. So unless you really need the voice control, I’d recommend steering towards the Smart Remote over the Remo. With the Remote connected, you can power on the camera if it goes to sleep. You’ll see a “power on” screen on the remote. Press the shutter button on the remote to remotely power on the camera. It won’t work if the camera has the wireless connections option off. GoPro claims that its range is up to 196 feet (60 meters) in optimal conditions. Many of us don’t shoot in optimal wireless conditions, so we can expect the real-world range to be somewhat less than that. The Telesin Smart remote has some slight disadvantages like smaller range (80m instead of 180m) it`s waterproof to 1m instead of 10m and can control up to 10 cameras. The TELESIN remote however has a better magnetic charging port. I have used the TELESN remote for years and I have not missed the benefits of the original remote.

There are four buttons. On top is the power button. It’s straightforward. Just press to turn on. To turn it off, hold the button for two seconds. Your camera won’t connect to The Remote and the GoPro mobile app at the same time. It’s one or the other. As you’d expect, you can power your GoPro on and off and hit the record button to begin recording remotely. It lets you add HiLight tags to mark key moments and the LCD display lets you know things like the remaining battery life and how long you’ve been recording. All GoPro remotes communicate using a WiFi signal. This uses energy and it does mean you will have to recharge them using the supplied USB cable from time to time. The charging port is on the bottom and is covered by a rubber port door. When you connect The Remote to a USB power source, the front screen should show a charging indicator.

For the Max, it was added in firmware update v2.00 (December 17, 2020). You can find the MAX’s latest firmware here. Features & Specs This model has been discontinued. Even if you do manage to find one for sale, there’s really no reason to choose it over the new The Remote or Smart Remote, and there are some good reasons not to.
