The comparisons with rival budget TVs continue to do the Samsung BU8000 no favours when it comes to sound. Its speakers are severely short of volume and projection (especially versus the Toshiba 50UK4D63DB), and produce a much less dynamic mid-range. Anything approaching a big action scene lands with practically no impact at all, sounding thin and utterly unconvincing. As you might guess from how thin the TV is, its LCD panel is lit from its edges rather than from directly behind, while the panel appears to be a VA one, as with most (though no longer all) Samsung TVs. The VA panel costs the picture contrast and colour from wide viewing angles but should, experience suggests, produce better contrast than the rival IPS type of screen. The static contrast shows the ratio between the brightest and the darkest color, which the display can reproduce simultaneously, for example, within one and the same frame/scene.

Its pictures don’t do anything aggressively wrong, retaining good balance and subtlety, and its sound is pleasant enough as long as you’re not watching anything too demanding. The Samsung UE55NU8000 borrows its look from the company’s more expensive QLED TVs, although given the much lower price point, Samsung has cut some corners in terms of material and build quality. A near bezel-less TV designed to leave you with only the beautiful picture to enjoy. It's also flexible enough to work with your home setup too, thanks to a versatile TV stand. Simply adjust the space between the TV screen and stand to fit your soundbar. Plus, it’s easy to hide TV wires from sight and keep them tidy with the easy clean cable management solution, for a distraction-free viewing experience. It’s quite distinct through the mid-range and, again, quite decent levels of detail. Voices project forwards well, and they're actually quite nicely balanced – until they start to nudge into the upper frequency range. Once it reaches the higher frequencies, the BU8500 becomes quite hard and edgy, bringing sibilance and even a hint of coarseness to treble sounds. It’s a trait that’s only exacerbated by volume. Its screen bezel is a bit ‘budget special’, too, with its slightly chunky width and a brushed finish that’s probably supposed to conjure up thoughts of brushed metal but really just looks like what it is: plastic with thin horizontal lines in it.
