About this deal

Audix SCX25A

Neutral sounding, not too bright, fairly warm, natural and very handy, flexible. It's pretty hard not to think of the beloved 414 here. Two more switches provide a 3-way pad (flat, -10dB, -20dB) and a 3-way high-pass filter (flat, 60Hz, 120Hz). You can find any number of Chinese‑built microphones at the budget end of the market, but SE are one of the very few companies to own a microphone factory in China — rather than having their mics made for them in one of the huge factories in Shanghai or Bejing that specialise in building mics or capsules for third‑parties. Certainly, this has helped SE to build a strong reputation for value at the affordable end of the market, but they also make more up‑market microphones, many with innovative design features, such as the Titan's titanium diaphragm or the Gemini's dual-tube, transformerless circuitry. The T2 is essentially an sE 4400a with the dual-diaphragm titanium capsule from the Titan in place of the 4400a capsule. As sE states, the T2 and 4400a share the same chassis. The electronic controls are the same: both mics are 4-pattern mics, offering Cardioid, Hypercardioid, Figure of 8 and Omni, switched from the front of the microphone body. Pattern selection is accomplished via two of the switches on the mic; one switch allows selection of Cardioid, Omni, or Figure-of-8, while a second switch determines whether the Cardioid mode is Hypercardioid or not.

Is this good or bad, obviously, is a matter of taste, but in many instances it will at least keep the often human problem littered task of lead vocal recording free of technical problems or added colour that might be enhancing, or annoying, to the point of getting distracting to the performance. Yes, what I've just described above means that the sE 4400a is NOT a “character” instrument. It's more like a sibling of a very high end measurement mic converted to spoken voice, sung vocals and instruments duty – it does the job, but shows no particular passion. Because the sE 4400a seems to have more then a little of what it takes to enter the category of studio classics, and favourites.

As you'd expect, the large‑diaphragm design makes the SE4400 very good as a vocal microphone, and it should be quite flexible in this role, as long as you don't need to hype up the vocal sound too much. I even managed to make some good violin recordings, in which the top end of the instrument sounded very close to how I heard it in the room. Normally, I'd generally go for a mic with a more rounded‑sounding top end for recording violin, but I was putting this mic through its paces, after all, and the result I got responded very well to some gentle top‑cut EQ. The Genelec M Series products include several new, innovative technologies to bring you the finest audio quality At the heart of the microphone is a dual‑diaphragm, one‑inch, centre‑terminated capsule made in sE’s own factory in Shanghai. The mic covers the frequency range 20Hz to 20kHz (‑3dB) and like most mics of this type, has some lift in the presence region. However, most of the HF lift occurs around 10 to 12 kHz, giving roughly 4 to 5 dB of lift in cardioid and omni modes, which avoids giving excessive boost to the potentially harsh upper mids. In figure‑of‑eight mode the presence hump is focussed around 5kHz, peaking at around +4dB, though the general sound matching between the three patterns is pretty consistent. The sE2300 manages a sensitivity of 24mV/Pa (‑32.5dBV) and in conjunction with the pad can accommodate SPLs up to 146dB. Its A‑weighted noise figure is a healthy 9dBA. In Use T]he frequency plot is somewhat more revealing and shows a nominally flat response, but with a gentle presence peak at around 10kHz. This type of response tends to produce a largely natural sound, but with an extra sense of clarity at the high end… Its presence peak gives it a slightly flattering, larger-than-life vibe, but in a pretty subtle way that doesn’t make things sound too harsh, and the low end gains useful support from a little added warmth…

Using the T2 on vocals it does a great job, probably better with spoken word and male vocalists. When comparing it to the richness of the sE Gemini II, it just couldn’t compete with a female vocal… It's flat, and non metallic, extended in its' frequency range and free of artifacts or anomalies all along, from bottom to top. The aforementioned sheen is like a very, very gentle high frequency lift, that somehow accurately avoids any peakiness in the obnoxious 3 or 4 kHz region, and any harshness in the 7 to 10 kHz region. It's more air than sizzle. And it's very subtle indeed, just enough to breathe some excitement into sounds being captured, some sort of expensiveness in the sound, but never enough to get in the way or to be hard to dial out with some very light handed eq, or an appropriate preamp and compressor choice. Where the Shure KSM 141 SL is clean, the SE 4400A is warm. Boasting tremendous depth and fullness, the warmth of the SE 4400A is rich, classy, and grand without sounding out of place or imbalanced. Next we have two Bass cuts where you can choose a 60Hz or 120Hz cut, or of course, no cut at all. Very useful if you want to remove rumble or take out the unneeded frequencies while recording vocals. JZ Microphones BH-2 While the microphone is excellent for all sorts of classical guitars, rooms, and playing styles, a decent preamp is sometimes needed to get the best sound out of this microphone. The microphone also can sound a bit stiff in smaller rooms.
