Red standing man: do not cross; if it appears during crossing, then continue to cross if unable to stop safely

a b c 2009. Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways: Chapter 4. US Federal Highway Administration. URL Accessed: 7 January 2022.The United States is not party to the convention; rather, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) outlines correct operation in that country. In the US, a single signal head may have three, four, or five aspects (though a single aspect green arrow may be displayed to indicate a continuous movement). The signals must be arranged red, amber, and green vertically (top to bottom) or horizontally (left to right). [29] In the US, a single-aspect flashing amber signal can be used to raise attention to a warning sign and a single-aspect flashing red signal can be used to raise attention to a "stop", "do not enter", or "wrong way" sign. [29] Flashing red or amber lights, known as intersection control beacons, are used to reinforce stop signs at intersections. [30] The MUTCD specifies the following vehicular signals: [29] Standard meanings for traffic lights in the United States (MUTCD, Chapter 4) Before traffic lights, traffic police controlled the flow of traffic. A well-documented example is that on London Bridge in 1722. [3] Three men were given the task of directing traffic coming in and out of either London or Southwark. Each officer would help direct traffic coming out of Southwark into London and he made sure all traffic stayed on the west side of the bridge. A second officer would direct traffic on the east side of the bridge to control the flow of people leaving London and going into Southwark. Section 4L.02 Intersection Control Beacon". Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Federal Highway Administration. 2009. The introduction of automated traffic signals required a change of behaviour for pedestrians. Most urban groups welcomed traffic lights; signals were seen by many as favourable to police officer control because they were not affected by potential human biases such as racism or mistrust of transit companies. [1] :386–7 After witnessing an accident between an automobile and a horse-drawn carriage, inventor Garrett Morgan filed a U.S. patent for a traffic signal. [20] Patent No. 1,475,024 was granted on 20 November 1923 for Morgan's three-position traffic signal. [21]

Moyer, Sheldon (March 1947). "Mr. 'Trafficlight' ". Motor News. Automobile Club of Michigan: 14–15, 27. [ permanent dead link] The first traffic signal was invented in 1868 by J.P. Knight. In 1912, the first electric traffic light was invented by Lester Wire. The modern traffic light still uses this T-shaped model with three different colors. Computers are used to predict traffic and change lights accordingly. If the light is green and someone is still crossing and driving on the intersection, wait until they are safe. Likewise, if you are crossing and/or are in the middle of the pedestrian or intersection when the light turns green, move fast with caution. So you can see it is slightly different that the USA one. Instead of an instant green, the amber light comes on with the red light to warn driver that the green light is coming really soon but please stay stopped until then. Below is the timing chart to illustrate this. A traffic signal in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with specially shaped lights to assist people with colour blindness

Eight-hour vehicular volume. Traffic volume must exceed prescribed minima for eight hours of an average weekday. Crash experience. The volumes in the eight- and four-hour warrants may be reduced if five or more right-angle and cross traffic turn collisions have happened at the intersection in a twelve-month period. A third type is known as a "doghouse" or "cluster head"– a vertical column with the two normal lights is on the right side of the signal, a vertical column with the two arrows is located on the left, and the normal red signal is in the middle above the two columns. Cluster signals in Australia and New Zealand use six signals, the sixth being a red arrow that can operate separately from the standard red light. [ citation needed] In a fourth type, sometimes seen at intersections in Ontario and Quebec, Canada, there is no dedicated left-turn lamp per se. Instead, the normal green lamp flashes rapidly, indicating permission to go straight as well as make a left turn in front of opposing traffic, which is being held by a steady red lamp. (This "advance green", or flashing green can be somewhat startling and confusing to drivers not familiar with this system. This also can cause confusion amongst visitors to British Columbia, where a flashing green signal denotes a pedestrian-controlled crosswalk. For this reason, Ontario is phasing out the use of flashing green signals and instead replacing them with arrows.) [23] [24] Countdown lights [ edit ] The green light is also often the most abused traffic signal colors, especially in the Philippines. Since it indicates “Go”, drivers often do not care about people and bicycle crossing, causing accidents. Nicoll, Jared (8 August 2016). "Carmen Rupe lighting up Wellington streets once again". Now of course, all of this effort in learning how to sequence and time lights doesn't have to stop with a traffic light. You could just as easily use this setup to time Christmas lights or for simple stage lighting effects. You can still use a timing table to aid in the whole process. You could also use this as a crude timer for turning on and off things that have a significantly longer delay, like a patio light or a pool pump. Basically, something that needs to work around a certain timetable but not exact. Hopefully, this opens your imagination to other things beyond traffic lights. School crossing. If the traffic density at school crossing times exceeds one per minute which is considered to provide too few gaps in the traffic for children to safely cross the street. What we need for our simulation is a way to represent our traffic light; the LEDs will be used for this. The rest of the control and logic will be performed by the Arduino. It will serve as our intelligent controller and timer. That meansit will turn each light on and off and will count the time that each one should be on.

The gas-fueled lights needed to be manually controlled by a police officer using semaphore arms. During the daytime, the semaphore arms would be raised or lowered by the police officer, signaling vehicles whether they should proceed or stop. At night, instead of arms, gas-lit red and green lights were used. Red signaled carriages to stop, and green meant proceed. Red was used to stop, as it represented danger or caution, whereas green was determined to be a more reassuring color in most cultures and also has a strong emotional correspondence with safety. Green arrows are added to signals to indicate that drivers can travel in a particular direction, while the main lights for that approach are red, or that drivers can only travel in one particular direction. Alternatively, when combined with another green signal, they may indicate that turning traffic has priority over oncoming traffic (known as a "filter arrow"). [21] :3.5 Flashing amber arrows typically indicate that road users must give way (to other drivers and pedestrians) before making a movement in the direction of the arrow. These are used because they are safer, cause less delay, and are more flexible. Flashing amber arrows will normally be located below the solid amber. [22] Green arrows [ edit ] A traffic light in Westbrook, Maine, on State Route 25. Notice the red arrow to the left of the two green straight lights. Take the positive side of a red LED and insert it into pin 31. The positive side is usually the longer lead, but if they're the same length, the flat side of the outer casing is negative. For example, if the timer near a green light flashes 15, it means that you only have 15 seconds left before the light changes.
