About this deal

The super critical, nitrogen infused FuelCell provides really good energy return and makes it feel like a super foam. It’s not as bouncy as ZoomX but more bouncy than Hyper Burst, DNA Flash and Pwrrun PB. The FuelCell Rebel v2 is an amazing everyday running shoe that a lot of people should probably buy. It has a wide range of uses that will make it a great shoe for people of all skill levels and training types. Ultimately though, it's a shoe that can make the running experience fun. And sometimes knowing there will be little fun to be had is the thing that can motivate you to get out for a run. For that reason, these are my favorite running shoes I've tried over the last 12 months. Bryan: As with Sally, I have never tried the Rebel 1, but my first foray into the FuelCell midsole was in the TC, which then was already very impressive in creating a trampolining ride. Following on what Derek and Renee have elaborated, I am in agreement that the FuelCell midsole and or its translation into ride quality varies from shoe to shoe. The Rebel 2 was not surprising in its lightweightness but in its revamped style and in the softness of the FuelCell midsole.

My first run was an easy 10K but it ended up being 20 seconds per km faster than I intended it to be. The Rebel v3 wanted to go fast. It didn’t feel as different from v2 as I thought it would feel. It felt a little bit more stable and slightly firmer but still very energetic. Once sized correctly, the upper will accommodate most runners in its standard width. There is an optional ‘wide’ size for those who need one.No one, no matter who they are, ever wants to go running every time they've planned to. If there's any excuse available, it will be used to justify skipping a day from time to time. I've often considered skipping a run, but I could never pin it on New Balance's Fuel Cell Rebel v2 shoes. In fact, more than once they were the sole reason I decided to stay on schedule and head out on a run. Even the outsole coverage was mostly limited to the forefoot, and only a tiny slab of rubber covered the heel.

A plush and relatively bouncy shoe, the new Rebel features New Balance’s high-rebound FuelCell foam in the midsole. This gives it a light and responsive feel with a nice bounce while comfortably supporting longer runs. The aim is also to get some extra propulsion from the midsole foam, which most users report to be the case. Width for my narrowish feet was fine but didn’t feel they were true to size – half size too short due to the last, offset upper design and raised toe – got a blister on my big toe ! I guess one suggestion would be if you are a pronator, the midsole is a bit soft and can angle inward a bit. This is due to the lateral “wing” which flares out at the midfoot and forefoot and pushes your foot inward. This “wing” is not as prominent as on the Rebel V1 but it still results in medial side lean bias. There are a couple of potential problem areas. The first is the ultra-thin upper mesh, pictured here in shimmery white.Dr. David Salas is a 135 lb male with notable PRs ranging from 3:54 in the 1500m to 1:08:36 for half marathon. He typically runs 60 to 70 miles per week and trains from about 7:30 recovery runs to fast shorter efforts at 4:30 pace. He normally prefers neutral shoes with a firmer ride, but is completely open to other types of shoes. He is a footwear enthusiast at heart and will always appreciate a high quality shoe when it comes around. For updates on training or testing, IG handle: @docsofrundavid

Ryan/Jacob/Sam/Michael: Highly flexible midsole doesn't provide much stability, and limits toe-off power While I enjoyed the run I feared the Rebel v3 would have the same problem as the Rebel v2; that it would “bottom out” on longer runs where the foam stops providing as much bounce and cushioning once you pass around 12km. A daily trainer coming in at 7.1ounces (201g) is phenomenal! This is race weight, well almost anyway.

BEN: Really not much at all here. I love the shoe. If I had to stretch for something, I’d say that white isn’t my preferred color for a running shoe (the contrasting “goldenrod” yellow looks great – just pair it with something that doesn’t immediately look dirty). 🙂 Price comparisons are based on the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price ("MSRP") or Original Selling Price. Actual sales may not have occurred at this price. The Fuel Cell (sic) family is our line of performance, speed and rebound driven shoes but contrary to popular belief is not a midsole compound thus the vastly different rides of different shoes within the family.”

In the previous version of the Rebel, the outsole didn’t last long at all. This issue has been partly fixed in the Rebel v3 by adding more rubber. DPT/Footwear Science: A (Foam is new, and taking something so soft and making it functional is neat to see with the mechannics of the shoe) An odd thing about NB FuelCell midsoles is they are not all created equal. There are a few shoes in the NB lineup with this material, but on the Rebel V2 it’s the softest yet, and the softest we’ve ever tested. At just 6.5HA on the durometer it’s 70% softer compared to average (22.3HA) midsoles and even 48% softer than the similar FuelCell midsole used on the RC Elite (12.5HA). Personal: B+ (Really nice to run in, but with it being so soft I typically only can do 1, maybe 2, runs per week without soreness in my ankle stabilizers) Since 2017, we have analyzed hundreds of road running shoes, and thousands of runners trust us to find the perfect pair every month!Peter: Well covered above. I agree that it is very soft and very bouncy and that, without a plate (as in the TC) it can be a little inconsistent, unstable and unruly. Generally speaking the midsole is amazing and with a little bit of tuning/taming it could be perfect. When going up against the best all-round running shoes like the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 and Asics Magic Speed 2, the Rebel v3 does lose ground by not having a plate. However, some runners will prefer the flexible feel of the Rebel v3, and it’s certainly cheaper than those shoes.
