The persistent rain and flooding led to famine. [142] Another problem was the decline of the Antwerp cloth trade. [143] Despite Mary's marriage to Philip, England did not benefit from Spain's enormously lucrative trade with the New World. [144] The mercantilist Spanish guarded their trade routes jealously, and Mary could not condone English smuggling or piracy against her husband. [145] In an attempt to increase trade and rescue the English economy, Mary's counsellors continued Northumberland's policy of seeking out new commercial opportunities. She granted a royal charter to the Muscovy Company under governor Sebastian Cabot, [146] and commissioned a world atlas from Diogo Homem. [147] Adventurers such as John Lok and William Towerson sailed south in an attempt to develop links with the coast of Africa. [148] In September 1554, Mary stopped menstruating. She gained weight, and felt nauseated in the mornings. For these reasons, almost the entirety of her court, including her physicians, believed she was pregnant. [101] Parliament passed an act making Philip regent in the event of Mary's death in childbirth. [102] In the last week of April 1555, Elizabeth was released from house arrest, and called to court as a witness to the birth, which was expected imminently. [103] According to Giovanni Michieli, the Venetian ambassador, Philip may have planned to marry Elizabeth in the event of Mary's death in childbirth, [104] but in a letter to his brother-in-law Maximilian of Austria, Philip expressed uncertainty as to whether Mary was pregnant. I love Pride & Prejudice and enjoy reading the various spin-offs, sequels, and fanfics in Austen World. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this book. It's a depressing, ridiculous tale with characters who bear no resemblance to Jane Austen's originals. Janeites won’t find a perfect heir to Austen here, but as fan fiction, or a fresh novel of manners, Chen's work is compelling. Edward VI died on 6 July. Mary was proclaimed his successor in London on 19 July; sources differ on whether her regnal years were dated from 24 July [1] or 6 July. Even though she’s mostly an unlikeable, sharp-tempered shrew, not only does drunken lout Col. Fitzwilliam Darcy (almost totally unrecognizable from the affable Colonel Darcy of P&P) but Darcy himself fall head over heels for Mary. **eyeroll** It felt more like a self-insert tween fanfiction than a competent re-telling and extension of the beloved P&P story.

I have to admit that I never really wondered what happened to Mary Bennett after the closing lines of Pride & Prejudice. And I smiled and laughed at the subtle humor Jane Austen used in portraying Mary's opinions, her unattractiveness, and sullen behavior in social situations in comparison with her other four sisters. I glossed over Mary as just a plot point, an unimportant side character. I never really gave her much thought. Until now.
