I think this book was very informative rather than having a fun, eventful twist to it for kids. I understand that the original legend might not have a fun twist to it, but if it is a children’s book, it should be more fun! I sat reading and thought to myself, “this text is not very fun to read.” I remember when I was younger and there was a lake near my home town. We called it the “Walgreen lake monster,” and this stemmed from the idea of the Loch Ness monster. Students would be much more likely to retell or create a new story based on a historical figure if it is fun for them. According to the Venerable Bede, Columba left Ireland and passed over into Scotland in AD 563 for the sake of another pilgrimage, but there's evidence that he become involved with an internecine war in which his kinsmen were involved. In addition, he was upset that a rival had misappropriated one of his books. The argument centered on the right to copy his psalter. ( i.e., Cathach of St. Columba) We know about the history of monsters in Scotland because ancient pictures of these strange beasts have been discovered. The drawings were made by the Picts, people who lived in Scotland from around AD 100 to 840. The Picts carved images of large water beasts into stone almost 1,500 years ago. However, according to his biographer, his anger was reserved towards those who wronged others. (II, xxiii sq.) And, for the most part, the retribution that overtook the perpetrators of said crimes was predicted than actually invoked. The novel ends with Zachary and Brandy, now married, leading a successful investigation to find the monsters in the Sargasso Sea. His night terrors have not resurfaced and the two are expecting a child.
