About this deal

With November fast drawing to a close, and we get ready to say goodbye to fresh, homegrown apples, I thought I’d slip in this delicious, favourite apple cake recipe. Because once December comes around, it’s all about the jingling bells! Around 1.5 tablespoons cinnamon sugar to sprinkle (1.25 tablespoons sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon) Meanwhile, combine the apples and sour cream. Spread evenly over the base and return to the oven for another 15 minutes.

So we’re talking different apples, different flours, different sugars, different fats, different ingredient ratio and with or without a topping – there are so many ways you can go with it. This is a great experiment to guide your kid through the scientific method of making an observation, asking a question, forming a hypothesis, designing an experiment, analyzing the data, and forming a conclusion. The Scientific Method If you like a little spice in your baking you can use the option of adding cinnamon and allspice. You could also add a pinch of nutmeg if you like that flavour, I think that most sweet spices would work well in this recipe or if you prefer a plain taste just leave them out.

Different varieties of apples will have distinct tastes. If your kids find that one is too tart, they may enjoy a sweeter type. I appropriated her cookbook some time ago because she doesn’t actually cook. Hasn’t since I met her over 20 years ago, and according to my late husband, hasn’t cooked “properly” for as long as he can remember. Dear Reader, did I mention that I am terrible in a crisis? I will literally stand there frozen while disaster unfolds around me. In a bowl, combine the cake mix and melted butter to form a dough. Spread the dough evenly in the baking dish and bake for 15 minutes.

To prepare apple filling, add apples, cinnamon, nutmeg and fresh lemon zest to a large mixing bowl. Stir until apples are coated. Pour apples over crust and spread out into one even layer. The sour cream layer The British apple cake itself has a few versions, but where I live, on the south coast of England, it is the Dorset Apple Cake that is the most popular. Because we’re in Dorset! moist and tangy, there’s nothing like it! Dorset Apple Cake Recipe If you child is loosing interest, point out something interesting for them to look at such as a brown spot on the flesh. Or ask them why they think something is the way that it is.

Fun with Apple Recipes

Put just over half the biscuit mix (350gms) into the greased cake tin and lightly press down until it is evenly spread out on the tin. The mix will feel like quite a thin layer in the tin thin but this is normal. Bake for about twelve minutes or until the base is starting to turn a light golden color.

You can, and it's safe to eat once frozen and defrosted. But you definitely lose some of the lovely crunchiness. Looking for more yummy sweet recipes?

Gail Gibbon's children's book Apples is a great resource if you are studying apples with your kids. Starting the Activity

Yummo!! Who would have thought sour cream and apple could taste so yummm…Moorish!!. Easy to make, tastes great. Thanks this would be my go to dessert recipe now! Add the dry ingredients for the base except for the sugar to a bowl and whisk to mix. In a seperate bowl cream the room temperature butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Make teaching easier with our activities and recipes compiled in theme sets and books with an easy to read format When it comes to preventing an apple slice from browning, the winner is salt water! The lemon juice was a close second. Interestingly, vinegar seemed to have accelerated the browning process instead of slowing it down. I've made this slice with both tinned apples (a pantry relic from 2020 COVID where we bought tinned fruit) and fresh, stewed apples and they both work well. The only advantage to home stewed apples is that I tend to add cinnamon and sugar to them. This recipe was inspired by a late afternoon stroll down a street. At a crossing I paused and looked up and saw one of those old fashioned bakeries that sell apple slices, custard tarts, vanilla slices and those very random frogs. I went in and bought one and it was delicious, imbued with memories I had thought were long gone. I was so excited to make it that I woke up early the next morning and made it. We often think of an apple as just a fruit. But really, it is a result of a flower that has been pollinated! As you eat an apple, you are enjoying the end result of the flowering stage.
