About this deal

An unlikely hero rescues his Icelandic village in this picture-book retelling of “The Binding of Fenrir.” This book also teaches children no matter how small you are, you can still make a difference in the world. Great for Growth Mindset, mythical adventures, vikings, and recount. The Vikings believed in many different Gods and Goddesses. Each god had its own personality. The main gods were Odin, Thor and Frey.

In this idea, pupils explore the different thoughts Arthur may have as he contemplates what he should do. Odd, a crippled orphan in a Viking village, isn't of much interest to his clan. When he leaves for adventure, he finds three talking animals that are actually gods - and they need his help. This is a wonderfully wintry, magical and mythical story. In this activity, your class will read the sentences/passages and identify the missing punctuation.

Arthur's adventure begins in a small Icelandic town and comes to encompass many of the mythic heroes and figures from Norse mythology. Arthur himself is delightful; independent, brave, charming, and he steps up to save his town when all seems lost. In this idea, pupils explore where different stereotypes come from and discuss how to challenge them. In this idea, pupils can apply their understanding of prepositional phrases by exploring a picture from the book. Kids love the illustrations and story. I've since realized that this is the second book in a series, but the first is no where to be found. I hope we can eventually locate a copy of the first book. In this idea, pupils use drama to explore every element of the text including language, grammar and punctuation.

After reading the first half of Arthur and the Golden Rope book, your class can complete this comprehension and answer a range of questions based on their understanding, ability to retrieve information and apply their literacy knowledge. Today I want you to go on a sound walk. What noises can you hear around the house? Where is it the most noisy? Where is the quietest spot? Do you recognise all the noises you hear? If you are able to go outside, what noises can you hear in the garden? This book is fantastic! […] Arthur is just too cute and for any unpopular kids out there, this book will encourage them to embrace their uniqueness because as unlikely as Arthur is, he’s the town’s hero! Disclaimer: Many thanks to NoBrow for the opportunity to read and review. Please assure that my opinions are honest. Blending elements of picture book and graphic novel, Todd-Stanton’s book offers a light introduction to Norse myth, drawn in a style that evokes both classic Franco-Belgian comics and the work of contemporary creators like Kate Beaton and Noelle Stevenson.

Thor was very strong. There are many stories of his battles against giants and monsters, whom he defeated with his mighty hammer. I used this book as a hook for my year 5 class to get them excited about mythological beasts with the eventual aim to have them write a non-chronological report about one. The First Drawings by Mordicai Gerstein (Y3 planning sequence in the Literary Curriculum) would be an ideal text to teach this alongside.

Frey was the god of fertility and birth. When Vikings married, they would ask Frey to bless them with many children. Frey’s sister Freyja was the goddess of fertility and love.
