About this deal

Maxima's twist-open nozzle is the best applicator that we have used for viscous type chain lubes. It produces a needle-thin stream that prevents unnecessary waste. The cassette and chain in the pic has three rides on it - one in wet and two in dry conditions. It’s fair to say not everyone will have the inclination or patience for it though. After all, outright efficiency and cleanliness almost certainly matter less to most commuters than the ability for your bike to last a couple of weeks in all weathers without cleaning it. Squirt is a favorite amongst riders in dry areas as well as cyclocross racers everywhere. This wax-based (available in wet and dry) long-lasting lube is great for anyone on the road or in the woods. Squirt lube lasts longer than other waxed based lubes that we've tested previously as it has 4 waxes emulsified well. It contains 36% wax rather than the 17% typically found in other solvent-based wax lubes. There are many different types of lubricants out there from various manufacturers. Each one has a specific formula that is designed to withstand certain conditions and work with different types of chains. Additionally, this stuff doesn't only lubricate but it can add protection and increase longevity. Types of Oil With my time trial bike, which is a pure race bike, I rotate two to three freshly waxed chains on and off it.

Most lubes contain synthetic oils, along with friction-reducing additives such as PTFE (Teflon) and carrier fluids that evaporate after application. If you’re after the fastest, most efficient drivetrain possible, immersive waxing is currently king. Look around any professional race or time trial and you’re bound to spot more than a few waxed chains. The O-rings that seal the factory grease inside the chain sit on either side, between the inside and outside plates. The roller is not sealed, and sits in the centre Don’t be tempted to use a container with a lid on for shaking it. The expanding steam could blow the lid off and cover you in boiling water, which would be bad. Lubricants based on paraffin wax (yes, the stuff they make candles with) have grown massively in popularity in recent years, as independent testing has shown them to score extremely well on efficiency, longevity and in resistance to contaminants.

There’s no industry standard for chain lubes, but in general, a wear scar of 2mm is usually considered very high in lubrication testing, whereas one of 0.4 is good. As a rule of thumb, a wear scar of one millimetre or more would usually indicate that a lubricant isn’t performing as well as it should. Coming from a notable brandthat has been around since 1979, the Maxima wax is one that many motorcycle enthusiasts constantly depend on. One loyal customer confirmed that they “have trusted Maxima for years to maintain the chain on my motorcycle.” Another buyer called it the “gold standard in motorcycle chain lube.”

USER REVIEWS

Here we can see the actual weight of the sand that was retained by the plates after being dusted. This was done AFTER the fling test, to provide a realistic example of how the lubes would perform on the bike. This product is designed to clean and protect your chain from rust and corrosion. It’s also great for keeping your drivetrain running smoothly. Another option is Pro Gold Teflon Chain Lube. If you’re travelling with your bike, or simply don’t want to clean and wax chains in batches, then topping a waxed chain up with a wax-based drip lube is a decent way to extend the interval between full re-waxes. We put the chain in at this point so it heats up with the wax. This helps the metal parts to expand slightly, enabling the wax to get inside the rollers and pins, where it’s needed most.

When using the chain cleaner in combination with the brush, riders can easily get rid of any oil or debris. The cleaner is made without chlorine so it is completely safe for the seals and rings. The added gloves make the process much more sanitary for the user. It needs to be totally spotless, inside and out, because any residual oil or grease will contaminate your wax and make it harder for the wax to adhere to your chain. The initial cleaning phase is the hardest and most time-consuming part of waxing chains. If you can do a few chains in a batch, you won’t need to do it again often. Topping up waxed chains with wax-based drip lube The kit list for immersive chain waxing is, unsurprisingly, longer than “a bottle of chain lube and a rag to wipe away the excess”. Rollers: These are also referred to as unsealed and considered the traditional chain. These are unsealed because they are just basic bearings linked together and are completely exposed. Because they are exposed they are more time-consuming to maintain as they require more frequent lubricating. They also generally don’t last as long.

This lube contains Teflon particles that help reduce friction and wear on your chain. If you’re looking for something a little more affordable, then consider Finish Line Dry Chain Lube with Teflon. This lube goes on wet and dries to form a protective film that helps reduce friction and wear. Look around any important race and you’ll likely see a few immersive waxed chains. This one has a healthy dusting of extra PTFE powder to further reduce friction. Ben Delaney / Immediate Media Heavy-duty, chemical-resistant rubber gloves – for handling chemicals and objects containing hot wax. The other chain can then be re-waxed at your convenience. If the chain got wet, make sure you dry it off thoroughly before storing it, otherwise it will rust. It’s also relatively easy to apply and doesn’t attract dirt and grime like some other types of lubricants. Wax lube can be applied in two different ways: wet or dry. Many cyclists prefer to apply wax lube when the chain is dry, as it’s easier to work with and less messy. Here at BikerRated, we think that every biker’s garage should be a sacred place. Not just a place to securely store your motorcycle but space where you can work on it in comfort and enjoy not just riding, but owning and maintaining your motorcycle. Ceramic lubes have started popping up over the last few years, with bold claims about increased performance, alongside increased prices. It’s not always clear what they contain or what benefits they offer over other types of lubricants, though.
