Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters: 10 Secrets Every Father Should Know by Meg Meeker If you are not the child’s father but you are the mother’s partner and share the main responsibility for caring for the child, then you may be entitled to SPL. A partner is someone who is the spouse or civil partner of the mother or someone who is in a relationship with the mother and lives with her at the time of the birth. Your employer cannot ask you for the appointment card because this is the property of the pregnant woman. This empowering book offers practical advice and guidance for fathers to help nurture strong, confident daughters in today’s complex world. Fatherhood: The Journey From Man to Dad by Billingsley, Givens, And Johnson

The Expectant Father by Armin A. Brott | Waterstones

I also read this book, and found the information to be pretty generic, and easily found online. I agree that it'd be nice if there were a book for dads, but it needs to be researched and informed and to treat parents with respect.

If you are an expectant father or the partner of someonedue to give birth or adopt a child, you could be entitled to time off to attend ante-natal appointments plus up to two weeks’ paid paternity leave. You may also be able to take more time off in the first year as Shared Parental Leave andbe entitled to some Shared Parental Pay. Your employer can’t make you work during a period of SPL but you might find it beneficial to use SPLIT days, for example, to attend a training day or generally keep in touch.

Although it may not be an easy conversation, Brott says that having settled the issue with your boss early will allow you to feel much more in control. To take parental leave, you must give your employer at least 21 days’ notice. Your employer can postpone a period of parental leave that you have requested (unless it’s to be taken around the time of the birth) if they believe it would unduly disrupt the business. However they must allow you to take the leave at an agreed date within six months of the start date you had requested. One of the key focuses of The Birth Partner is providing emotional and physical support during childbirth. The book offers guidance on various comfort measures, such as massage, relaxation techniques, and effective positions for labor. Simkin also discusses the importance of communication between partners, coaching expectant fathers on how to offer verbal encouragement and reassurance during labor. The Birth Partner is a valuable resource for dads-to-be who want to be actively involved in their partner’s childbirth experience. With its comprehensive coverage of the birth process, practical advice, and emphasis on the vital role of the birth partner, this guide is an indispensable tool for expectant fathers and other labor companions. #5. Be Prepared: A Practical Handbook For New Dads by Gary Greenberg And Jeannie Hayden So where can a new or expectant father find support? Organizations that lead support groups are out there if you want them, although many men tend to shy away from that sort of thing. Being more involved earlier can prevent this from happening. "And studies show that the earlier guys get involved," Brott says, "the more involved they are as parents for the long run." Dealing With the Boss All employees have this right from day one. Agency workers qualify for this right if they have been in the same role for the same hirer for 12 weeks or more.

Your employer must not subject you to any detriment or dismiss you because you have taken or intend to take paternity leave. Shared Parental Leave and Pay have been continuously employed by your employer for 26 weeks or more by the 15th week before the baby is due and are still employed by them All your terms and conditions (e.g. accrual of holidays, pension contributions, access to company car) continue as if you had not taken leave, except your right to receive your normal pay (you will receive paternity pay instead). Return to workUnder the basic right, you can’t take more than four weeks’ parental leave a year for each child (if you have two children the maximum amount would be eight weeks’ leave a year). However, your employer may vary this. If your partner gives her employer notice that she does not intend to use her full entitlement to maternity leave and pay, this is called a ‘curtailment notice’. She must give this notice at least eight weeks before the date she wants her maternity leave and pay to come to an end. I wish there was more information about some of the studies discussed. The references are dropped in without discussion of methods or limitations, which makes them sound like settled fact (unlikely from a single study). There were a few weird commentaries that seemed like unnecessary jabs and a few topics that didn't seem quite right. You can request a discontinuous pattern for taking SPL from your employer – for example, two weeks on, two weeks off – but your employer has the right to refuse such a request. Once the baby arrives, The New Dad’s Survival Guide dives into the practical aspects of caring for a newborn. Mactavish covers topics like mastering the art of diaper changing, swaddling techniques, and soothing a crying baby. He also discusses important safety concerns, such as safe sleep practices and car seat installation.

The Expectant Father: Facts, Tips and Advice for Dads-to-Be

I think it’s vitally important that fathers have more of a say and a role in their child’s upbringing. I also think it’s annoying how TV and movies and the media in general have portrayed most fathers as dim-witted, lazy, or altogether absent in the lives of their own children. Societal views of fathers are generally pretty negative, and perhaps there is some justification, but there is a growing number of men like myself who actually WANT to play as important a role, if not moreso, than the mother’s. If your employer rejects your request but they have granted similar requests from mothers then you might be able to claim sex discrimination. Emergency time off for dependants
