Baker, S.E., and D.W. Macdonald. 2012. Not so humane mole tube traps, Animal Welfare, 21: 613-15. https://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/ufaw/aw/2012/00000021/00000004/art00019?crawler=true. Pest and predator control is an integral part of conservation and wildlife management. It is necessary to reduce predation and damage to acceptable levels, particularly at vulnerable times of the year such as the nesting season. Williets, B. 2021. Bournemouth man immersed grey squirrel in freezing water, Daily Echo, 9th October 2021. https://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/19636099.bournemouth-man-immersed-grey-squirrel-freezing-water/.

Having a rat infestation, whether it’s just a few determined rodents or a whole mischief (which is, funnily enough, the collective noun for a family of rats) can be both damaging to your home and dangerous for children and animals. It’s also more than a little unsettling knowing that they’re in the walls or loft or running rampant around your property. The European Commission is reviewing this guidance and a decision will be made in 2022 about establishing a voluntary trap certification scheme based on this. In the meantime, several types of rat and mouse trap have been tested by the German Environment Agency and shown to meet at least the Category B welfare standard – these can be recommended and are listed below. Providing the scheme goes ahead, this list will be updated to show which traps meet Category A and which meet Category B. Mice love sweets, and what better sweet than chocolate? Depending on what type of chocolate you have, most mice will give it a whirl without much though. A hook in the middle of the cage holds the bait. Once disturbed, the hook triggers a spring that releases both doors, which slam shut, trapping the squirrel while leaving it unharmed. With its galvanized steel construction, this RatzFatz trap is suitable to use outdoors. Though smaller than other box traps—at 17 inches long, 5 inches high, and 5 inches wide—it’s large enough to capture most squirrels while preventing larger animals from entering the trap. Easy to bait via a removable kill chamber, this also means that disposal of the remains is a ‘no see, no touch’ experience too, making it ideal for those on the delicate side when it comes to pests.Once you can see that the kill bar has sprung, you’ll know you’ve caught and killed your mouse, so now to get rid of it; which is where this Rentokil option continues to assist those with more than a touch of musophobia (fear of mice). Thanks to the design of the front tube, the mouse can be easily dropped into a bag or bin without having to even see it, let alone touch it.

Ultrasonic Sound Repellents: Another humane method to keep rats and mice away. These devices emit a high frequency noise which is unpleasant for rodents. Mice may be one of the most irritating pests to some people, leaving thoughts of having a rogue mouse running around the home eating left overs, eating through wires, and wreaking havoc. Glue traps often are placed in similar locations as snap traps. After encountering the trap, mice are immobilized by an adhesive surface. Rodents trapped expire from hypothermia since they can't move and maintain their body temperature. Most poisons available for use with rats and mice (rodenticides) are anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs). These poisons interfere with the target rodent’s metabolism of Vitamin K and disrupt its blood clotting mechanisms, ultimately causing death by blood loss through internal haemorrhaging and external bleeding (Mason and Littin 2003). Rats and mice in many areas are resistant to first generation anticoagulants (FGARs) and, where this is the case, FGARs should not be used. More potent second generation anticoagulants (SGARs) have been developed, but resistance to SGARs has also started to occur and SGARs are more persistent in the environment and more harmful to non-target species (CRRU UK 2021). Long-term rodenticide baiting should therefore not be routine practice and some ARs can only be used inside buildings. Poisoned bait must be properly protected from children and, as far as possible, from non-target animals. Outdoors, bait should be placed inside a secure, tamper-resistant bait box unless it can be placed under suitable existing cover. Where bait is used indoors, access by children and any non-target animals must also be restricted. If in doubt, use a bait box. As part of the plan, a Defra-led technical working group was set up to look at the issue of trap testing and assessed whether proposed new traps were likely to meet the requirements of AIHTS. BASC is represented in this group and has financially contributed towards the testing of new traps. The Victor Metal Pedal Rat Trap is my number “1” choice on the ROCC-O-METER® for snap bar traps due to affordability.

This trap can catch a problem squirrel at a fraction of the cost of other cages. It features a two-door design, increasing the likelihood of a squirrel venturing inside. The double-door design takes a little longer to set up, but the trap comes with instructions. Regardless of the type of squirrel trap you choose, consider these following key features when shopping for one. Construction and SetupUsing nesting material as bait is not a new tactic. Mice are nesting animals, which means they will select a spot they are comfortable and safe in and make a nest there. That means they need a lot of material to create this nest out of. Key specs – Pest control method:Mechanical; Pest control type:Non-lethal; Usage:Indoor/outdoor; Bait included:N; Dimensions:380x 170 high x 180mm If you have other material lying around your house such as shredded paper, cardboard, and similar things, then you can try those as well.

The reason I wanted to go over the things mice do not like is because those are some of the things you shouldn’t try to use as bait or near your bait. But they will not work well as a mouse repellent. Best Bait for Mouse Traps Anticoagulant poisoned rodents are likely to experience severe to extreme welfare impacts for days before dying and are thought to remain conscious throughout. Anticoagulants are one of the least humane methods of rodent control and should therefore only be used as a last resort. Haemorrhaging occurs into organs and body cavities, including the lungs, as well as in the skull, which is very painful in humans. Bleeding into the brain may cause convulsions or paralysis. Behaviour is compromised, making poisoned animals more vulnerable to predation. Animals will experience severe pain, breathlessness, weakness, thirst, dizziness, anxiety and fear ( Baker et al. 2022). AR poisoned rodents die from anaemia or because blood loss causes organ failure. The UK’s Pesticide Safety Directorate described this method as ‘markedly inhumane’ as a result ( (Pesticides Safety Directorate) 1997). During treatment with rodenticides, rats and mice may sometimes be found poisoned but still alive. Such target animals should be humanely killed immediately and their carcases disposed of safely. Experts recommend a strategy based on Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which posits that there's no single cure-all solution to pest control. "Multiple things must be done to prevent pests from entering the home and to make the home a less desirable habitat if they do enter," noted the Building Performance Institute. Here are the key best practices. Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. 2014. Code of practice for the use of vertebrate traps. http://www.cieh.org/Code_of_practice_for_the_use_of_vertebrate_traps.html. Chartered Institute of Environmental Health: London, UK.When most people think of a mouse trap, the snap mouse trap is what they’ll imagine. Snap traps have been around for decades. They are simple, cost-effective, and work straight away with little setup. A straight forward method to get rid of rodents without using chemicals or poison. Snap mouse traps include a spring loaded platform combined with an arm bar which is set off once a mouse puts his weight on the bait. Catch and Release Mouse Trap (Humane method) However, the use of other traps listed on the STAOs remain legal for certain species and circumstances providing all relevant requirements are adhered to.
