About this deal

In the late eighties and into the nineties, DC worked quite hard to construct a social history of Batman’s city. As all men do, when they realize they have been following a false leader, they turn on Blackfire and rip him to shreds. In subsequent years, All-Star Batman and Robin has seen a resurgence in interest from fans, but for all the wrong reasons. It's nuanced story telling and while there are moments where you think 'yeah this guy is a comic book villain', there's a lot in the narration that is quite poignant too.

Rat-Face then attempts to murder an African American police officer but is instead knocked out by Batman. The answer is obvious – having Blackfire discover that Bruce Wayne is Batman would complicate the plot significantly. Here, for example, we get to meet the Miagani tribe – the Native Americans who inhabited the region before the European settlers. When Batman refuses to attack the man, Rat-Face charges towards the man with a large knife and stabs him to death before Batman can stop him. I realise “Dark Knight Rises” has this as a big part of its story but at least with the film there were large stakes – a nuclear bomb – as opposed to thousands of homeless people wandering the streets. With a career dating back to the early 1970s, he is best known for "cosmic" tales and space opera; for revamping the Marvel Comics characters Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock; and for creating or co-creating the Marvel characters Thanos and Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu. Gone were the days of Batman and Robin chasing The Joker over a giant piano, replaced by full panels of brutal violence and a general feelings of hopelessness for the citizens of Gotham. There is a sense of humour, but it unfolds around Batman – as if the character himself must be taken seriously at all times.

Batman: The Cult by Jim Starlin | Goodreads

Batman realized it was all a trap, but it was already too late, as his injury caused him to pass out, leaving him at mercy of his attackers.Deacon Blackfire, a charismatic shaman with roots as old as Gotham City itself, has amassed the city's homeless into an army, one he seemingly uses to fight crime. This made me feel sympathy for Jason Todd, and if you know what Jason is up to these days, that's not an easy thing. Batman must find a way to stop a cult from destroying the world and turning humanity into reanimated corpses. A neighboring cell mate, who is largely obscured behind the steel door of his cell, proposes Nashton a riddle, asking, "Riddle me this. Through Selina, Batman discovers that Savage was on Falcone's payroll, as is district attorney Gil Colson.

While Wrightson’s artwork does evoke Miller in places – particularly at the climax and in structuring the media panels – it retains its own identity. This is Batman at his lowest and it takes a good 50 pages for him to recover even after he's free of the cult. Thanks to the city under hell, Robin, and his determination, it's up to Batman to make it out alive and save everyone.Michael: I do feel that after a while, the book loses focus and becomes ridiculously large scale in a manner I had no idea was coming. The layout of panels featuring televisual panel discussions, and the thin veneer of social commentary, feel like they owe a debt to the work of Frank Miller.
