About this deal

Thankfully, the wait time is nowhere near that of the original Commodore 64, where games on cassette tape sometimes took several minutes to load. For any noobs to the maxi then I can confirm that the PS3 controller works after pressing the ps Logo button - I’ve enjoyed playing it so far but now the PS3 controller has taken it to a new level - thanks everyone! I know this can be done on an emulator, but what about on a real C64 with a C64 compatible joystick with two or more buttons? The C64 certainly delivers authenticity, but it does so warts and all; it even seemed as if Planet of Death misloaded a couple of times.

I really enjoy playing The C64 and can see myself using it regularly going forwards, but I’m also fully conscious that not every modern gamer will. While 64 titles is a large number to choose from, there were thousands of games released on the original Commodore 64, so it's likely that many of your favorite games from that era are going to be AWOL. There is also an engrossing 2017-developed release on board: Galencia, which plays homage to the formative arcade shoot ’em up Galaga, as well as the vintage text adventure Planet of Death, providing a chance to put that keyboard to use.I've tried with PS2-controller-to-USB adapter, and a (wired) PS3 controller, which have more than 8 buttons, but no luck at all (people did get these to work on the "TheC64 Mini", so that's also quite peculiar that they don't work on the Maxi). It’s a shame so much really early stuff is on here – it wasn’t even really that playable at the time, let alone now!

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Bear Bovver is actually on here, which was fantastic news to me and probably very few other people.

Now Retro Games is back with a distinctly less mini version of THEC64 – which I’m now going to refer to as The C64 for my own sanity – and what it loses in charm it gains in functionality. Surprisingly, there are loading times which accompany the launching of each game on the C64 Mini, with some games taking longer to boot up than others. Securing ROMs of classic games is legally complicated, but the C64 provides a fantastic – if fiddly – means to access the numerous contemporary homebrew games made for the Commodore 64.

However, the next screen after this will be very familiar to anyone who's played with a NES Classic or SNES Classic Mini console. Stephen primarily covers phones and entertainment for TechRadar's Australian team, and has written professionally across the categories of tech, film, television and gaming in both print and online for over a decade. In March 2018, British company Retro Games Ltd launched THEC64 Mini, a dinky version of the classic Commodore 64 hardware from 1982 repurposed for the modern era. Unfortunately, it lacked two things so important to the Commodore 64 experience: a working keyboard and a decent joystick. These include the aforementioned Bear Bovver as well as the fantastic Attack of the Mutant Camels, though on a personal note the removal of Skool Daze stings a little. Then I got creative an added a switch to permantly hold the 1st button in so I could play pitstop II without getting RSI.

Some of the games in here are even older than me – and that’s saying something – and if you don’t have much experience with early ’80s gaming and may therefore struggle to appreciate these offerings in context, you’re just going to be left with a bunch of truly archaic games that you may find difficult to get into. There’s still a thriving homebrew scene for the original Commodore 64 and a lot of these games were made in recent years, meaning they were designed with modern standards in mind. They are okay, I'd even say the internal switches are slightly better constructed than in the original joystick. Since the internal circuit board has exposed solder points for floppy-drive and keyboard ports, hardware modifications of the C64DTV are relatively simple. The C64 is compatible with an old standard first used in the Atari 2600 gaming console; the same standard used on the VIC-20, the C128 and the Amigas.
