About this deal

As a child, I'd devoured all of Dahl's books including this one, but its depth and underlying horror hadn't really registered with me as a nine-year-old. During this journey, he met various people [2] and described extraordinary events such as a lion carrying a woman in its mouth. Dahl wrote more than 60 short stories and they have appeared in numerous collections, some only being published in book form after his death. All negative issues relating to Colonialism aside (I'm not going to go there and neither does Dahl) I completely understand what he means.

Going Solo by Roald Dahl | Waterstones

It made me feel like there was still a lot missing or that there should have been another book after Going Solo. However, on 20 April, on a golden springtime morning at ten o’clock, all twelve of us took off one after the other and got into a tight formation over Eleusis airfield. Almost over before he began, his initial adoration of flying is powerfully detailed before his (more truthfully documented) account of the crash that put him in hospital for 6 months. A friend of my parents knew him and told me that though he could be difficult with adults, he always had time for their daughter and used to make up elaborate nicknames for her.

While he convalesces, Dahl continues penning his weekly letters to his mother, though remains careful to censor his news, so as not to have the letters destroyed. The Dahl of Going Solo is a curious Peter Pan-like figure experiencing adult adventures without growing up properly. It is not so bad when everyone is flying straight and level, but when the entire formation is doing steep turns all the time, it becomes very difficult for a fellow as inexperienced as I was. The book started with Dahl's voyage to Africa in 1938, which was prompted by his desire to find adventure after finishing school. He makes perfectly clear that this is not such a book, for autobiographies are full of useless and boring information. The one aspect that is most pervasive and persistently present throughout the text is the constant reminder of the link between fact and fiction and between the world of reality and the imaginative pursuits it stimulates. C., his more successful time with the British Security Coordination, and his marriage to Patricia Neal. It saved me from anxiety and kept me hooked, awed, and encouraged through the airport fiasco and two long-winded flights. Dahl outwardly admits the need to use this letters, both because of his age when writing the tale and the number of events that can mesh together in wartime.
