About this deal

For such a large lamp, it's got a very modern, almost brutalist look — if your decor leans more traditional, you might have trouble finding a spot for it. The lamp arrived with the EU plug attached, but switching this to the UK plug was simply a matter of sliding the EU plug upwards to release, and replacing with the UK version.

Since then, gradient control has been folded into the main Hue app, and we’re seeing a slew of products that use the light strips, including the Philips Hue Gradient Signe Floor Lamp. Indeed, it has a vastly smaller footprint than a conventional floor lamp, especially one with a tripod. While the Govee options needed some assembling, and the finish wasn’t great, the Philips Hue Gradient Signe Floor Lamp comes pre-assembled in its box. Admittedly, I'm yet to do this (I need more Hue lights) but it might be something I try later on this year – watch this space!

If you place the Hue Gradient Signe near a power socket, 170 centimetres of cable are simply not needed. Smart home device maker Govee has announced the Lyra, a new floor lamp from the company that offers millions of color options alongside numerous creative flourishes. I was able to brighten or dim the lights whenever I wanted, but I preferred to have the Gradient Signe set to a dim level – because the brightest setting really is very bright. The Philips Hue Gradient Signe Floor Lamp is similar to the Govee Lyra Floor Lamp, in that both are floor-standing lamps with gradient light strips in them. Philips Hue market this product with that the phrase "minimal design, maximum light", and that is really accurate to what the Gradient Signe delivers.

With the power cable attached, I positioned the light within easy reach of an electrical outlet, ready for testing. The Signe floor lamp is worth your consideration, even as a more conventional lighting fixture, but it really shines when the colors come out to play. The Hue Bridge made it possible to control the light from anywhere inside or outside the home, and also delivered greater choice over automation and personalized scene galleries.

In addition to Hue's ready-made color combos, you can set combinations of any three colors of your choosing. After I was able to announce yesterday that Philips Hue has activated the new gradient functionality in its app, I can now finally introduce you to the first new product that can create a colour gradient: The Philips Hue Gradient Signe floor lamp. During the testing period I set routines, explored the beautiful Hue scene gallery, and controlled the intensity of the light. My main quibble was that you can only control the lamp using the app, or by switching it off at the mains; there's no on / off on the unit itself.

Alternatively, in the app head to Settings > Lights and select the blue cross in the top-right corner. I noticed that the brighter colors were super-bright and, at this stage, it wasn't clear if the light could be dimmed. Generally, you’ll find her watching the latest Netflix series, digging around in the garden or attempting to make a cake that is edible. One of the main points of difference for the Signe light is that it uses gradient technology, which blends multiple colors of light in a single fixture.Even though the new Philips Hue Gradient Signe so far only allows the selection of three segments instead of the promised five segments in Ambiance mode, the colour gradients just look fantastic. One of the issues I encountered when using Alexa to control the Signe in my home is that since Alexa is downstairs, and the Signe is upstairs, turning on the light while upstairs using my voice proved rather difficult; Alexa was positioned too far away to hear my command.

And adding smart lights to Assistant routines is a tedious process that involves too many steps (and a lot of checkboxes). The Philips Hue Signe gradient floor lamp is another example of Hue’s great design and smart home savvy, brought to life in a way that can light up any room, either as a standalone device or as part of a chorus of Hue accessories. The Signe is expensive, sure, but it delivers excellent levels of smart lighting that can be customized as you see fit, and be used for many different things, too.Frankly, it would have been a lot quicker and less frustrating to just turn off the Signe Gradient via the app. And Hue Entertainment also benefits from the new Gradient technology, because even in interaction with the Hue Sync Box or the Hue Sync Desktop App, the new version of the floor lamp displays not just one, but several colours.
