About this deal

Given her irascible reputation, it is touching to hear how much she loves the speaking part of her job.

The Fran Lebowitz Reader: The Sunday Times Bestseller (Virago

It’s a combination of that and the fact that if I’m not the laziest person that ever lived, then I’m certainly among them. The material on this site may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted, cached or otherwise used, except with the prior written permission of Condé Nast. I have been familiar with these characters for years but only now was pleasantly enlightened to the fact that they were caricatures of actual personality types in New York dating back more than fifty years. As well as telling her daughter to keep her opinions to herself, Lebowitz’s mother would caution her against being funny, especially around boys. Fran's first-person voice mixes ego-centric, 1970s swagger with an underlying sense of alienation, setting the stage for her timeless, sardonic wit and biting social commentary. There were a couple of mildly amusing parts, but if you don't find Lebowitz funny, there's nothing interesting here. Read this when it first came out, because of a review in NYT Book review which, unfortunately, as so often, held at least half the best lines in the book. The entire collection reads like a bunch of half-assed blogs by a smart-assed kid, which is made all the worse by the casual racism, homophobia, and thoughtlessness of her era.

Fran Lebowitz: ‘If people disagree with me, so what?’ Fran Lebowitz: ‘If people disagree with me, so what?’

Because you’re not just explaining what it’s like to be a woman, you’re explaining what it’s like to be a girl. This is not to say that it is without its drawbacks - chief among them being its regrettable tendency to encourage people in the belief that all men are created equal. Whenever she had had enough of a bad job, she would look at the job listings in the Village Voice and get another one. I really enjoy Fran in Public Speaking and her other talks, but her writing was, as one reviewer put it, "all wit, no world view. Ale mam juz przy przynajmniej jedną cechę Fran - jestem przekonana, że zawsze rację (nawet jak jej niby nie mam, to ją mam).

Most of God’s children are, in fact, barely presentable … Generally speaking, I look upon sports as dangerous and tiring activities performed by people with whom I share nothing except the right to trial by jury. Fran Lebowitz non è una scrittrice, ma l'opposto: passa più tempo a non scrivere e a cercare metodi per rifuggire la scrittura che a fare qualsiasi altra cosa (oltre a lamentarsi). I enjoy the idea of lying around all day reading magazines, though I doubt I could get anyone to pay me for that.

Fran Lebowitz, and Martin Scorsese The Delights of New York, Fran Lebowitz, and Martin Scorsese

Chciałabym być tak sarkastyczna jak ona, być tak błyskotliwa, mieć tak czarny humor, mieć tak cięte riposty, mieć taki dystans i generalnie mieć wywalone na wszystko tak jak ona. This is because I don’t want to wait for room service to bring the coffee, I want to go get the coffee myself. Wilson, who, at thirty-four, is nearly forty years Lebowitz’s junior, gives viewers an exploratory, lo-fi, collage-style depiction of the city, which includes bare scaffolding in Harlem and his cat’s litter box in his Queens apartment. I think to some degree that very brand of comedy, if it didn’t originate in New York, is at least emblematic of the people who thrive there. This is a collection of Lebowitz essays that originally were published in Warhol's magazine, Interview and in Mademoiselle and all were written in the 1970's.A lot of the author's humor is relatable and I felt like I was reading the origin stories (or the source material for the origin stories) for characters like Chandler Bing and Carrie Bradshaw. In “elegant, finely honed prose” (The Washington Post Book World), Lebowitz limns the vicissitudes of contemporary urban life—its fads, trends, crazes, morals, and fashions. Scorsese loves characters, and his style is to let them reveal themselves through gesture and, especially, through speech.
