About this deal

For me personally, I have the personality trait of sensitivity but not shyness, so perhaps the answer varies among individuals even if there is a common pattern among different forms. As someone who has struggled with obsessive thoughts for as long as I can remember, it was amazing to read this book.

The imp of the mind by Lee Baer | Open Library

Baer's view is that drugs should be a last resort rather than a first resort and realised that helping people understand more about how their mind works is often the key to success. Although I'm not as "special" as the patients listed in the case studies, this book made me accept that bad thoughts happen to everyone from time to time. Back then I felt about them much the same way you probably do: as an outsider looking in on an interesting quirk that I didn’t understand. Rather than unsuccessfully trying to suppress or divert them, the sufferer should acknowledge them, face them, and expose their impotent nature ultimately to neutralize them. Most people who think that can think, "wow, that's a bit of a crazy thought", then just go on with their day. Even if suicidal intrusive OCD thoughts are like most other OCD thoughts (irrational), most responses are still going to be "get help immediately". But out of this our cloud upon the precipice's edge, there grows into palpability, a shape, far more terrible than any genie, or any demon of a tale, and yet it is but a thought, although a fearful one, and one which chills the very marrow of our bones with the fierceness of the delight of its horror.

It’s reassurance, which can be a compulsion, but I’ve felt that understanding what’s going through my head has helped a lot.
