Each guest finds the rhyme Ten Little Nig***s posted on their room door, as each guest is murdered one by one. Once the three bold golliwogs, Golly, Woggie, and Nigger, decided to go for a walk to Bumble-Bee Common.As early as 1936 a BBC memo dismissed a short story she had submitted with the comment, “Not strong enough. Upton did not trademark her character, and its name, spelt "golliwog", became the generic name for dolls and images of a similar type.

Later that month, a Norfolk café owner removed a display of golliwog dolls after police declared the exhibit a "hate incident". He has been a guest speaker on numerous national radio and television stations and is a five time published author. Many of her books patronise children using repetitive and limited vocabulary – nearly every noun is prefaced by “dear little” and children are usually divided into “lovely”, “naughty” or “wicked”.

Ten Little Nigger Boys, at first glance, seems like an ideal poem/song for the golliwogs to be singing; in the author's mind this probably seemed funny and appropriate. In 1964 her books were taken from the shelves of a public library in Melbourne for their “stereotyped” nature, after which children “very soon ceased to enquire after them”. While The Little Black Doll was unquestionably racist even by the standards of its day it was the presence of golliwogs in Blyton’s wildly successful Noddy series that garnered the most attention. But apparently her writings have been revised for modern audiences and some of the more controversial lines have been edited or removed.
