We played an ice-breaker game that involved crossing our arms and holding hands so that we were entwined.

The Yoga Manifesto: How Yoga Helped Me and Why It Needs to

We are delighted that we have the opportunity to come together in practice with Nadia and also listen to Nadia share her personal yoga journey with us. It’s going to be different for everyone but what I’ve discovered is that most of us need something to believe in. Founder of the Highland Yoga Collective, Fiona Palmer, said: "We are so excited to be hosting Nadia this Friday as part of her Yoga Manifesto Tour. What you’re holding isn’t an expert’s how-to-do-yoga book, nor is it a tips-and-tricks guide to building a yoga career. When we guide students by invoking yoga philosophy, we are guiding them to the present moment of their experience, right here, and now. I really wanted to speak to Waylon about Elephant and how he grew a small local magazine to a worldwide publication that we all recognise. Peter is the author of seventeen books of poetry and prose including Within Within, One Hundred Butterflies and Bright Root, Dark Root. This yoga boom is a zeitgeist I didn’t see coming when I first got on a shabby mat in an old community gym in 1996 when this practice was still obscure, seen as alternative, somewhat radical even. Staring at the map on my phone, I turned onto a residential street in a scruffy but elegant neighbourhood. His courses are presented in a supportive and compassionate fashion making it accessible to all levels of practitioner to participate. I think it did a lot towards some of the discussions around yoga, cultural appropriations, its purpose and what it means to practice. Whether you directly teach pranayama or not, you can always remind and guide your students to come back to taking full, deep breaths in each shape they are in or moving through. Teenagers are all the same really: cocky, confident, insecure; asserting their place, but also shying away from it.

This is an incredible book, and provided such valuable insight in to the yoga and wellness industry, and reflections for how we could be doing things different.

I realized that they might not be interested, just as I hadn’t been when I went to my first yoga class. The noise inside was what hit me first: a giant speaker on wheels blasting out hip hop instrumentals that I recognized and liked but the ceiling’s way-too-bright lights were glaring down and I wasn’t sure about those. As someone who also started practicing yoga in the 90s before it blew up, who has fallen in and out of love with it and who has also felt despondent by the lack of inclusivity and cliqueiness of yoga studios, so much of Nadia's experience resonated.

This would be a beautiful point at which you could say namaste , if you like to incorporate Sanskrit, as it is a traditional way of greeting one another used in South Asia. Above all, we all have a responsibility to make sure that yoga is available to anyone who wants to practise it. Yoga in the west has been so heavily commodified that “Namastay in bed” T-shirts and tattoos of decontextualised Sanskrit and Hindu gods have become commonplace. She shares in a beautifully raw way how yoga moved her, where she finds it now and challenges us to look at the practice we hold dear with tender eyes. It's great to have the author's strong opinions gained through her own yoga and life experiences - a contrast to other yoga works that are more detached. What is abundantly clear to me as a yoga teacher is the practice has been led astray by western economic forces. How he begun to understand how his creative process comes from him How the art of practice is intimacy How all relationship is intimacy Who the great Soto Zen master Dogen was. Open your practice by countering the erasure of thousands of years of codification and development of yoga science by Indians and other Asian and African people by acknowledging the roots of the practice.
