About this deal

At the time and even now, having read this book and many others that consider aspects of the Falklands War, I could not - and cannot - understand how service personnel could be left in such a vulnerable position for so long, surrounded by large quantities of ammunition and facing an Air Force that had shown itself capable and courageous in pressing home attacks. However, even dogs on extended leads don’t stray on to roads, where cyclists should be (Letters, March 9). Using for the first time a trove of formerly secret Ministry of Defence documents, Crispin Black captivatingly brings to life how the outcome was decided in ten critical minutes and that the Falklands War remains to this day one of the most misunderstood episodes in modern British history.

The author's purpose is to explain the issues that led to increased casualties by the British forces. In his book, Mr Black shares new evidence from documents released to the National Archives in Kew, South West London. It's a devil really, because you can't see the injury, everyone thinks you're all right but underneath you're screaming. On June 8, 1982, 38 members of the Welsh Guards perished when the troopship Sir Galahad was attacked by Argentine jets. Crispin Black, at the time a young Welsh Guards junior officer, was there on that dreadful afternoon when so many young Welsh Guards and other personnel suffered death and mutilation in a few short minutes, so his words must command our attention.

Robbie Williams reveals he once 'slashed his wrists' in a bid to end his life and didn't sleep for 144 HOURS. Black insists that Major General Moore, 'a few hundred yards away', should have foreseen how vulnerable his men were, and intervened to save them.

And in the fog of war, it's almost impossible to work out exactly what's going on — whether you're in the thick of the action or watching from a distance. Probate (Letters, March 7) was granted within a few weeks, and the funds distributed to the beneficiaries. SIR – The only accidents I have seen caused by extendable dog leads (Letters, March 10) have involved a dog doubling back around me quickly. His book about the 1982 tragedy, which killed 56 servicemen and injured hundreds more, is due out this month. As the government’s national archive for England, Wales and the United Kingdom, The National Archives hold over 1,000 years of the nation’s records for everyone to discover and use.I can still see the bombs leaving the aircraft,' one Falklands veteran told an interviewer last year. With his body ablaze and his throat choked with smoke, Weston scrambled up the ladder, screaming with 'shock and agony', and collapsed on deck.
