About this deal

The UDM and UDM-Pro run a new operating system underneath, UniFi OS. UniFi OS is Ubiquiti’s name for the software which run UniFi applications, such as Network, Protect, Access, LED, and Talk. The UDM only runs the Network application and UID. Those additional applications require a different UniFi Console like the UDM-Pro, or Cloud Key Gen 2+. Basically a UDM-Pro, plus PoE out on the 8-port switch, 128 GB of internal storage, and an upgraded 2.5 Gbps RJ45 WAN port.

Ubiquiti never officially supported editing the JSON configuration file, but it allowed for flexibility. It was never a good system, and those modifications were never guaranteed to work, or survive firmware updates. It is an old, unsupported way of managing a UniFi network. Unfortunately, there are situations and features where this is the only option. One of the most interesting aspects of the spec list are the asterisks. Those are worth examining a bit closer. It’s interesting these features are not supported on self-hosted UniFi Network application installs. It seems like an indication of where they are guiding their customers. The UniFi Network software has always been available for free, but this is the first time a feature line has been drawn between self-hosted and “officially” hosted. It’s possible that more features like this are added over time. Basically a UDM-Pro without the built-in UniFi OS Console, 8-port Ethernet switch, or 3.5” HD bay for UniFi Protect. All UniFi Gateways, Cloud Gateways, and UniFi OS Consoles, as of November 2023. See my UniFi Router Comparison for more details. For clarity I've separated them into categories based on their role. Note: In firmware version 1.7.0, currently in beta, they mention WAN assignment option, and support for DHCP Options 60 and 61 on WAN on the UDM-Pro. Features are being added, slowly but surely.

We are very excited to announceUniFi OS- a shared platform for all UniFi Controllers. Key features: UXG-Pro is a new gateway device that is aimed towards delivering performant and feature-rich gateway experience. It will support all currently available UniFi gateway features and even more! All UniFi Cloud Gateways, as of November 2023. These models are newer, and they all run UniFi OS. They have been called UniFi OS Consoles, Gateway Consoles, and now Cloud Gateways. They act as routers or firewalls, and also run the UniFi software applications like Network and Protect. These can’t be used with Cloud Keys, cloud services, or a self-hosted UniFi Network application. The UDM and UXG run a different underlying operating system than the USG. The CPU is an easy way to tell. Older MIPS-based devices EdgeRouters and the USG run EdgeOS. ARM based devices like the UDM and UXG run UniFi OS. An ARM port of EdgeOS is unlikely. UniFi OS is a custom Linux distribution made with Buildroot Linux that mostly follows Debian standards. In their announcement, Ubiquiti said this about UniFi OS: Networking interface LAN:(1) 1 GbE RJ45 port(1) 10G SFP+ portWAN:(1) 1 GbE RJ45 port(1) 10G SFP+ portUbiquiti launched the USG line of UniFi firewalls quite a while ago, such that they have been kind of replaced with the new UDM line, but there are still some use cases for a single purpose device. With a UDM or UDM Pro, it is not possible to adopt them to a cloud hosted UniFi server or a Cloud Key. If the device needs to be replaced for any reason it can then be hot swapped out with minimal downtime or in some cases cost to the user too. In the case of the UDM, the model with the WiFi AP integrated, the cost of upgrading it to WiFi 6 for example, is more than if you had a separate UniFi AP. The UXG-Pro should be a good, cost-effective 10 Gbps router that will cover most basic functionality. It will fit in well with existing UniFi networks. Don’t expect it to replace a Cisco ISR, or Juniper MX. Since the UXG-Pro has the same processor and 10 Gbps ports as the UDM-Pro, we should expect similar performance. This graph shows it all. Here’s a good example of how to configure an USG to route traffic over an OpenVPN tunnel. If this type of configuration is intimidating to you, take a hard look at what is officially supported. You will be limited to the settings in the web interface unless you are willing to create custom, breakable configurations on old hardware.
