About this deal

My Dad swears by his, thinks the tone is fantastic, he’s been playing since he was 12 (hes now 76) but we think he’s a bit deaf.

Your donations all go back into the site to allow me to keep bringing you reviews, and in the end the ukuleles acquired are given to local schools and charities. Players seeking an instrument with a bit more substance may want to consider the KA-15S (also from Kala) or the highly-rated Donner and Hricane ukes in the table below. These similarities are unsurprising as the man behind Kala, Mike Upton, started the company after leaving Hohner, Lanikai’s parent company.

To my mind that’s no bad thing, particularly when one’s a beginner and still building confidence, or else want something to mess about on without having to worry about neighbours etc. Please give us the reason for your assessment in the following text box and – if possible – your e-mail address for further questions. Ok It’s my first Uke and it’s a gift from my wife but, it’s ok, I can learn a lot of things, the sound it’s not bad and it stays in tune for a long time.I put Martin Fluorocarbon strings on both ukes and I found the white one sounds absolutely wonderful. If you’re the kind of person that doesn’t bash the strings quite so hard though you’re going to get the most out of this uke. It’s great for people who want to learn the ukulele and try it out before dropping big bucks on an instrument they might not like or commit to.

The Agathis wood choice delivers a traditional balanced tone with a dark appearance that is very classy in a world of brightly coloured beginner ukes. Yeah, it might seem a little weird and perhaps the D’s a bit resonant but hey; now I have a great little knock about “Mandolele” that I just can’t put down.I had my dolphin for four years, and despite having a Fender (Tenor in low G) and "upgrading" to a Marshall (don't do that) for standard tuning, I still play my beginner uke the most.

In January, this year, I joined the Sandbach U3A ukulele class and, with the Aquilla strings that James fitted as an 'extra', it is a joy to learn on. Turns out, I love it, and this was the smartest move I’ve made to ensure I didn’t spend a ton of money on a hobby that isn’t for me. Originally I bought the Makala MK-S for my dad, he’d expressed an interest in learning ukulele very shortly after I started playing. The Mahogany neck provides a sturdy foundation, contributing to the overall stability of the ukulele. So I will happily find myself still strumming this when at home - perhaps more than I do some of my other instruments.
