About this deal

Today, I’m sharing some of the activities that we did for Robert McCloskey’s Blueberries for Sal. This is technically a Before Five in a Row book, which is right on level where I can teach both of the older boys together. Blueberries for Sal Activities Adding to the appeal of these high-quality fruits are the flowers which they produce, with some varieties have large white flowers in Spring, and fiery foliage in the Autumn. Blueberries for Sal Cookbook by Robert McCloskey

The canning process involves quite a bit of heat and a lot of waiting, so it isn’t my favorite kitchen activity with little ones. I like to imagine Sal’s mother making other blueberry treats too. J. Drew Lanham, a professor of wildlife ecology at Clemson University and the author of The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man's Love Affair With Nature, knew he wanted to be an ornithologist—a bird researcher—at an early age. Growing up in rural South Carolina, on the edge of Sumter National Forest, he spent his free time watching birds near his home and reading field guides that he and a childhood friend with a shared interest in birding found at their school library. The adventures of little Sal and the baby bear while hunting for blueberries with their mothers are beautifully illustrated in this classic children’s book. I especially enjoyed the old fashioned quality of the drawings as they capture the spirit of a long gone era.It is a good idea to plant two different varieties of blueberries to ensure cross-pollination although two of the same variety is just as acceptable. A single blueberry plant will produce fruit, but the yields will be higher and the fruits bigger if more than one plant is grown. They require a position in full sun or light shade. But I DID know we loved this book, so we spent many fun afternoons doing activities relating to this classic children’s book. Today I’m happy to share many of these great resources with you. I truly hope they are a blessing to your family. History

Perhaps Blueberries for Sal, published in 1948, is the picture book my sister, age four, and I, age two-and-a-half, are intently studying in my favorite childhood photograph. My father took the picture before he and my mother divorced. But even when I enlarge the photo, I can’t see the title of the book we are holding. But I hope it was Blueberries for Sal. We lived in Maine very near the book’s location when our youngest daughter was born, and our older girls spent several summers “rakin’ berries” for extra money. Our copy of the book is well-read and dog-eared. Thank you for the memories! TALK ABOUT when Blueberries for Salwas written andhow different 1948 wasfromtoday. Not only in the way they dressed, what they ate, and how they preserved their food, but also in the kind of dangers they faced. While many people who lived 70 years ago were more likely to face natural dangers–such as meeting wild animals–they were much less likely to face stranger danger. Discuss how you would never ask your child to go “run along” and walk alone in a public mall and why. Bible TALK about your grandmother’s kitchen, in the mid-1900s, and how it was very different than your own today. ( Blueberries for Sal was written in 1948.) Then interview a grandparent about food preparation and preservation when they were children. Video tape or record the interview if possible. My family still has an audio recording from a dozen years ago of an interview my daughters did with each of their four grandparents about their childhood memories. It is a family treasure for sure.
