My Dad isn’t one for movies (he goes to them, has ones he wants to see/likes, but really doesn’t care all too much past that overall), but there are 2 he loves and watches over and over in his life and its this one and the Harrison Ford version of The Fugitive. Could it be that her appearance in this movie got her the role in one of the best television series ever? Its one where seeing these same jokes again are always welcome, comforting and still pretty damn funny.
John Hughes is famous for saying that the Vacation series of movies are just a Chevy Chase vehicle, but I don’t see that as a bad thing. It’s funny, witty, down right insane and if you’ve ever spent a giant Christmas gathering with your family, I’m sure pretty much all of us can find something in common with the poor Griswolds. He says “You’ve got a lot of nerve talking to me like that Griswold” and Clark responds “I wasn’t talking to you” (in reference to the man’s wife). It has a great heart through the laughter and I cannot imagine NOT watching this movie around Christmas. The HDR10 does good work to enhance the film’s colors, especially the reds and Christmas lights throughout but most noticeable in darker sequences like Chevy Chase’s wild sled ride into the Walmart parking lot. Blu-ray (reviewed in its Steelbook variant by Michael Reuben) which greatly improved on the image quality of the first Blu-ray.

As mandatory viewing each and every year, it’s a great reminder of how to sit back and simply enjoy the holidays without fussing over every tiny little detail. Sadly they didn’t offer up any details there in the press releases, but this is a lovely image in great condition without any speckling issues. Another point of note is that this is an early appearance of Julia Louis-Dreyfus (aka Elaine on “Seinfeld”). But I think there’s a strength here in this film’s ability to relate despite not being fully in tune in your life with the family on screen.
