Unfortunately rather than being hardcover as described at time of sale, it was a paperback but it is in good condition . The palazzi that rise up on either side of the street prove that it has long been a respectful, noble street. The oysters have perfectly realistic colouring and the little twist of lemon on the ice are perfection. By turns eccentric, wistful and polemical, Betjeman's writing for the Telegraph gave voice to this unease. The coffee’s not necessarily the best but the atmosphere is and it’s a good spot for an aperitivo amongst the arty locals.Piazza della Passera: As mentioned above, it’s so small you may not find it on a map so just wander along via Toscanella from Borgo San Jacopo and you’ll bump into it. The quality of the essays is a little variable, some were enjoyable and thought provoking whilst others were a little flat and uninspired. In architecture, grand Victorian edifices were pulled down to make way for gleaming brutalist monuments to the Future. I can’t tell you the times when tourists would yell at us, claiming we shouldn’t ride our bike in this ancient part of town, I would kindly remind them we had to live there and get around … The evenings, however the view over the renaissance church, beautifully lit and the views over the cathedral even prettier, I couldn’t sleep through the noise of people having fun in the bars on the square, students singing, and sirens running. It turned out to be Eric Denker, art historian from the Smithsonian and the National Gallery, who must have been Venetian in a former life, such is his knowledge and passion for the city.
