Universal's 2160p/Dolby Vision UHD presentation of Halloween Kills improves on an already excellent Blu-ray in all key areas. Perhaps most Halloween Kills works really hard to be something more than it is. It tries to open things up and let in a lot of the extended family of characters and make them relevant, but it doesn’t have a story thrust to make that effort worth it. It feels very much like the film you watch so you can watch the next and hopefully better movie. While I did enjoy this entry, I am not in the camp that calls this the worst of the franchise, but I am reserving final judgment until Halloween Ends hits theaters on October 14th 2022 (if we're all still alive). Hopefully, that movie doesn’t blow it. editing and cadence hinder the end result. The film is very good in some respects, then, and stale in others. Strode Family Values (2160p/Dolby Vision, 3:37): Exploring the Strode family dynamics as they have evolved over four decades and as Let’s face it – there are films that are simply made to be “dark.” And I think we can all agree that any Halloween movie fits this bill. Even some of the daytime scenes (in any of them) isn’t exactly sunshine and rainbows if you get what I’m saying. Taking that into consideration, Halloween Kills takes place mostly at night as, well, it’s supposed to. The mask is different (though some painstaking details shown in one of the featurettes showed how they had to re-create the 1978 mask), but everything else is the same. The 2.39:1 HEVC 4K image has no problems with the shadows, detail is razor (sorry, couldn’t resist) sharp and all the other caveats apply.
