The only difference was that when I needed to cut away the mold, the plastic juice bottle and 2 liter bottles were a little harder to cut.
In the absence of explicit documentation about the process of casting Clasped Hands, instructions published in the nineteenth century and examples of life casts by Hosmer’s peers record the process that she must have undertaken. Contrary to claims of contingency in accounts of indexical portraiture, the complexity of the historical life casting process—from making a mold of living bodies to producing a plaster cast from that mold—speaks to both material and artistic agency in determining the resulting sculpture. Historical sources reveal how human hands and artistic materials came together in tension, constraining, resisting, and threatening one another. Indicative of broader assumptions about body casts, Nicholas Penny has suggested that the “documentary value” of Clasped Hands would have been “diminished by the assertion of artistic mediation”. 23 In contrast, these understudied texts suggest a historical conception of life casting distinct from later interpretations, one which recognized an artist’s skill and choices without diminishing the significance of the resulting sculpture. A good quality paint brush - this is essential for keeping your edges clean and applying water to your plaster. A plasterer’s hawk board - this is the tool that holds your plaster. A plastic hawk board is lighter than a wooden one, although both types are absolutely fine. I used nearly 5 pounds of hydrostone on two pours, one for 4 hands, and one for 2 hands. In both cases I ended up with enough extra to make several sand castings.

Materials AlginateThis molding compound forms a rubbery elastomer within minutes of mixing with water. Captures impressive detail, while being flexible enough to prevent entrapment of the hand. It dries and shrinks over time, so it's not suitable for more than a few castings. I used ALG-390 from Special Effect Supply Corporation, which is a 3 minute set alginate. How much I usedI tended to make more than needed, as I would rather waste a little now for a lower chance of making a mistake than mix less now for a higher chance of having to do it over again wasting even more time and material. Now that I've done it once, though, I expect I'll be more frugal in the future. Scaphoid Fractures: These occur in the wrist's small bones (scaphoid bone) and are often caused by falling onto an outstretched hand.Scaphoid fracture symptoms include pain and tenderness in the wrist, swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving the affected hand or fingers.
I earlier instructed the model to place their hand into the molding compound in an open position, then move and wiggle for several seconds before settling into the final position. This helps adhere the alginate to the hand, preventing bubbles from settling near the skin and in the crevices between fingers. The alginate I used does not heat appreciably when curing, so I didn't need to worry about possible discomfort or burns.
