About this deal

How do we provide support networks for young females who are unsure about entering a male-dominated profession or progressing within it? So, we have fabulously successful female role models (see my article in the next ARB Magazine), industry-led support groups, Facebook for females, government campaigns, some opportunities for financial support, as well as some talented and supportive colleagues and leaders. What’s stopping us?

On the other hand, Adrienne Rich has been known to use trees as a metaphor for human beings; this is a recurrent image in her poetry. What new meanings emerge from the poem if you take its trees to be symbolic of this particular meaning? She's been to the European Tree Climbing Competitions six times, placing 2nd this year. Bo ranked 10/20 during her third visit to the ISA 2016 ITTC, beating competition winners from the North America, Asia Pacific and European championships. She also earned the 'Spirit of the Competition' award overall. Shortly afterwards, in the UK Open Tree Climbing Competition, Bo came a close 2nd to Jo in the Women's Masters, where she regularly places. Forestry England have commissioned the People’s Picture to create a photo mosaic which will go on display at the Women in Forestry, The Lumberjills Story exhibition at Grizedale Forest this May. The sequel is in no way inferior to its predecessor: the unique collection of historical amateur photographs, assembled and curated by the artist Jochen Raiß, feature a phenomenon that is presented in both a humorous and loving manner: young women posing in trees. Imagine, then, my delight when a friend handed me a copy of More Women in Trees ( public library) by the German photography editor, collector, and curator Jochen Raiss, a follow-up to his improbable hit Women in Trees ( public library) — an entry in the ledger of lovely things created by the confluence of chance and choice (which, as Simone de Beauvoir observed with her keen existentialist eye, actually includes our very lives and what makes us who we are.)

This is what commitment to tree climbing looks like and this is what Bo had to say about her climbing career.

I’m not saying we need to recruit more women regardless of abilities or suitability to particular roles.

Ans: If trees are to be taken as a symbol for human beings, then the poem will define the efforts of humans to free themselves from the clutches of the desire to achieve everything. All the human beings are under a constant pressure of being at the top in every field. Either they are forced by their own desire of doing so or there is a constant peer pressure on them. So, the human beings will set themselves free from this race and try to live a happy and peaceful life.

I found my middle-year college placement quite tough; I had been accepted on the BTEC diploma course at Merrist Wood with previous experience in the nursery industry, combined with a short course in climbing, so my first year at college was a bit of a challenge. I hadn't really mastered climbing, needed to develop my skills further and often felt way behind the lads on my course. Sharon: Show people who we are and what we do. Show people what a rewarding career this is. Enjoy it and encourage young people to join the profession. We all have a responsibility to do this.Tree climbing competitions and championships are held internationally and there are a growing number of competitions, competitors and spectators every year. The first competition I ever watched was nearly 20 years ago and there was only one female competitor. Of course she came top of her class! She was impressive, strong and fast, perhaps appearing even more so as she was brave enough to go solo when women entering tree climbing competitions were a rarity. If I knew her name, I would properly salute her true pioneering skills. This year 20 female competitors entered the ISA International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC) in San Antonio, Texas, compared to 44 male competitors. Things are certainly changing. Nowadays, women are more comfortable competing in what can still be considered a male-dominated industry, and women are also more accepted in that role than 20 years ago. I had difficulties at college convincing some of my tutors that I wanted to pursue a career in the private sector. I think that there was an assumption then that I'd take up a public sector position once qualified and experienced but I really wanted to be working independently. I would like to continue to work as I do now, providing advice to a small number of clients who I have come to know well over the years. I would also like to learn more about landscape history and incorporate this into my work if possible. Favourite tree?
