About this deal

Cooking with charcoal, with the sizzling sounds, smoky aromas and glowing embers, speaks to us of our long history of preparing hot food in the wild. Whether you are slow roasting ribs for a family picnic, smoking a salmon fillet on the beach or heating a vegetable pizza whilst camping, American style, this highly capable charcoal barbecue can grill and smoke any food to perfection. This portable round bbq model will cook your favourite recipe just as well as a larger charcoal bbqsuch as the classic Original Kettle. Important Features of our Smokey Joe portable BBQ The vents are on the top and bottom of the standard model, and on the side of the Smokey Joe Premium. I find the side vents a little easier to use, but it’s just a preference thing. The grill is small and light enough to carry with you camping, there is no need to ever disassemble it. It’s too fiddly to start doing that. Essentially all you need to do is pile your charcoal on one side of the grills substantial charcoal grate. The area directly above the coals is the ‘hot’ zone. This area is perfect for searing and getting those signature barbecue stripes all over the food.

Around 10-12 briquettes should be enough to grill some burgers and hot dogs no problem. If you’re using it for the first time start here. Generally, we are against using fluids to get a barbecue going. First, they can be time-consuming, and second, in kettle barbecues, you can often find that fumes and droplets accumulate in the bottom of the barbecue, this can present a little bit of a dangerous scenario. Indirect grilling is caused by heat convection. This where the air is heated by the coals. This air then goes on to circulate around the food and cook it. Indirect grilling can only happen when the lid of the grill is in place. No lid, no hot air circulating, no indirect cooking. The best way to do this is by regulating airflow. The Weber Smokey Joe has two air sources. On the lid, there is a rotating grate, and there is also a similar inlet at the base of the kettle.

Control the temperature of your barbecue without lifting the lid, by easily adjusting the damper. Closing the damper completely will cut off the oxygen flow to help extinguish coals You’ll be amazed at how many ways there are to cook on the Weber Smokey Joe. One great method is to create different zones. This is very easily achieved, let’s show you how. Well, this is the fun part of grilling using charcoal. Ask 20 people how to light a barbecue and they will tell you 20 different ways and swear that their way “really works”. The truth is that there are numerous options available. The design of the Smokey Joe Premium is superb in many ways. First up are its slender metal legs. These are stable and long enough to lift the fire off the ground or other surface. It’s easy to lean down and tend to a low fire on the ground, but the height also works fine on a tabletop.

This is due to the two vents in the top and bottom, or on the side on some models. They let plenty of airflow through when open to keep the coals burning. While it’s one of Weber’s most affordable BBQs, it’s certainly not inexpensive. However, the Smokey Joe is worth splashing out on if you’re an avid camper looking for a high-quality portable option that won’t need replacing a year or two down the line. Combustion by-products produced when using this product contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Direct grilling is a consequence of heat radiation. You know when you’ve got cold hands and you put them up to a fire. You are using the direct heat radiated from the flames to warm them. This effect is replicated when you cook over coals with the lid off. You are using the heat radiated directly from the coals to grill your steak. When you’re cooking on the barbecue, the thin handle is again useful: it props up the lid for use as a windshield. This unusual feature sets the Smokey Joe Premium apart from cheaper portable kettle barbecues like the Bodum Fyrkat.
